Petition filed against the purchase of PM’s bulletproof BMWs in LHC

Purchase of two BMW 760Li Bullet proof cars for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif‘s motorcade caused quite a row at press and amongst various ranks of public for using tax-payer’s money, 119 and 124 millions rupees for just two vehicles. Maybe the on-going operation required new addition to our PM’s security. However, an advocate has filed a petition in Lahore High Court against the costly purchase of two BMW 760Li vehicle as well as sniffer dogs (who cost 2.4 million rupees each) for the security of PM’s House.
With a country in such enduring battle with terror and poverty, the IDP’s were an added challenge for the government and the citizens and in such times for hardship, purchase of such lavish and expensive by a PM of poor state looks a bit selfish as per the lawyer.
While we do agree to providing security to PM of Pakistan, but now, its in the hand of Lahore High Court to give a verdict regarding the purchase of BMW bullet proof vehicles.

The Audi A4 remained Audi’s number one selling vehicle range in SA, with 2811 units delivered to customers in the first six months of the year.
“The first six months of the year have yielded good results for the brand which Audi plans to continue for the remainder of the year,” said Ryan Searle, Head of Audi South Africa.

Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe is an ultra luxury German muscle car

Mercedes Benz comes up with the aggressive looking S65 AMG Coupe to attain the unattainable. The latest member of the family is powered by a 621-hp 6.0-liter V12 bi-turbo. The engine twists out 738 lb-ft from its cozy home. The V12 spends output to the rear wheels through an AMG Speed shift Plus 7G-tronic transmission with three driving modes.
On the open track, the S65 AMG Coupe puts its V12 to work on a four-second 0-60 mph (96.5 lm/h) time and 186-mph (300 km/h) top speed. A luxurious performance couple like the S65 AMG Coupe is sure to attract its fair share of well-heeled buyers with less than professional driving skills.
The S65 AMG Coupe comes with a suite of driver assistance technologies. This includes Active Parking Assist with Parktronic, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and Distronic Plus with Steering Assist.
The twin blade grille of the aggressive looking S65 AMG Coupe sits above a three dimensional front splitter that keeps the car firmly grounded. The rear end gets some personality from a high gloss black diffuser insert and the chromed tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust. A generous amount of chrome trim delicately wraps elements of the front, flanks and rear, tying it all together.
The four sport seats of this AMG beast are wrapped in high quality leather with a diamond pattern design. Features like electric adjustment, memory function and heating ensure plenty of comfort for the driver and the passenger.
For the driver the three spoke sports steering wheel with perforated leather grip and paddle shifter has been designed. An infotainment touchpad gives the driver control over navigation, communication and entertainment options. Information is covered via a dynamic digital age duo of 12.2 in TFT instrument display and 8 x 2.75-in head up display. The standard 3D surrounds SOUND SYSTEM belts out the tune of the moment.
Mercedes-Benz plans to open orders for the S65 AMG Coupe in the coming week with US deliveries beginning in late 2014. It has not specified pricing, but the $216,000 price tag of the outgoing CL65 AMG and the $223,000 of the 2015 S65 AMG sedan give a pretty clear picture of the place it will live in.

2015 Toyota Corolla getting ready for display

I went  for routine maintenance of my 2012 Toyota Corolla at Toyota Dealership Lahore on 16th of July 2014. There, I noticed the that 11th Gen Toyota Corolla was getting a car wash and full detailing at their service station for the the launch on showroom on 22nd of July 2014.
The booking had started on 15th of July 2014. Though, the pictures attached are of Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 A/T which costs a staggering Rs 2,170,500. People gathered around the car were appreciating the sporty looks but were disappointed by its interior as it resembled from Toyota Corolla of 1970s and 1980s.
It does look better than its predecessors but will it fare as well as them, we’ll have to wait to find out.

Nissan aim to introduce self driving cars by 2016

Parking in a tight spot and driving on crowded roads can be frustrating but what if your Nissan in the distant future did all the work for you? Not your Pakistani Sunny of course.
The Japanese car maker Nissan is rushing on adrenaline to introduce vehicles that can park themselves and give you a break in traffic by 2016, CEO Carlos Ghosn announced during a press conference in Tokyo.
“By the end of 2016, Nissan will make available the next two technologies under its autonomous drive strategy. We are bringing to market a traffic-jam pilot, a technology enabling cars to drive autonomously and safely on congested highways. In the same time-frame, we will make fully automated parking systems available across a wide range of vehicles.” Ghosn said.
Two years later the company plans to introduce vehicles that can change lanes and negotiate roadway hazards automatically. Before the end of the decade, Nissan vehicles will be able to handle intersections without your help.
Nissan’s autonomous drive technologies are designed to enhance road safety and driving conditions by automating everyday tasks, Ghosn said. He further added, however, that truly self-driving cars, which don’t require any human interaction, are still a ways off. With Nissan’s new technologies, drivers will still remain in control and at the wheel.
Besides Nissan and Google, a number of other car makers have autonomous vehicles in the works, including Audi, Mercedes and Toyota.

China Emphasizes on Electric Vehicles

China’s smog is a massive problem for the the government which offering more official support on electric cars just so it can impact and reduce the smog around and in major cities. The state council on Monday issued a guideline to promote new energy vehicles, urging for construction of charging facilities and elimination of regional protectionism.
In the meantime, private funds are encouraged to take stake in the construction of charging facilities. The guidelines also say that local governments are not allowed to put up barriers to keep new energy autos from entering local markets.
The public sector will be the major buyer of new energy vehicles. No less than 30 percent of the total new government car purchases in the coming two year must be new energy cars.
Consumers will enjoy tax cuts when they buy new energy vehicles from September this year to December. The new policies area follow-up to the Energy Saving and New energy Automobile Industry Development Layout issued in 2012. China’s new energy car sales rose by almost 20% in the first half of this year.
China offers a big attraction for the electric car market already. The government wants 500,000 new energy vehicles on road by the end of 2015. But as of 2013, there were only 17,000. Lack of charging sites remain the major obstacle for energy vehicles.

Toyota Corolla 2014 – Dealership Review

It has been quite a few days since the 2014 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 was moved into the dealerships allover Pakistan and it began popping up over on our newsfeed. I, like many others, was waiting for some details and pictures of it until my curiosity took me to one of the dealerships. There was earlier an article about Corolla getting ready for display at a dealership but that was before the official display.
Anyway, I visited Toyota Garden Motors in Lahore and though it seemed to be a very busy time for the dealership, as almost every type of customer was stopping by to have a look at the new model. Since we, PakWheels members don’t get such support from automakers except a few, I managed to get enough time at the dealership to write a dealership review on different aspects of this car:
Exterior:
Good. In fact, very good. Far better than the previous one and the one before it and the one before. It’s sleek, sharp, and at the same time curvy, as you may expect from Corolla. I reckon that one can easily tell its a Corolla at the first glance, which is a good thing, and a bad thing too, but it does manage to keep its presence far better than Civic. There are chrome trims on door handles and turn indicators on side mirrors, a chrome grille at front and a chrome strip at the back, above the license plate. The wheels are the same size as previous model, with alloys as standard in the Altis category.
Sorry for no shots of the front, don’t know how I forgot it.

Interior:
I was very much doubtful as the discussions on forums and pictures, both were disappointing. But it’s not bad. It seems simple and modest. The steering wheel is sturdy, solid and tough. The three spokes hold a leather grip in the Grande and a plastic one in others. There are some multimedia controls on left spoke in Grande whereas the other ones are blank. It would have been better to have some controls on both spokes as it seems out of proportion. The cruise control stick is standard on CVT versions. The Grande also has Paddle Shifters which is a new thing for Pakistani market.

The meter cluster is also one of the best. Again, it’s simple, no extra things, just a blue background and thin needles, and unfortunately that’s all about it because they weren’t allowing to turn the car on.

The Dashboard is the part where most of Corolla fans were disappointed, as was I, but it’s not that bad. Toyota have tried to give it some humbleness and simplicity and they have done it quite well. It may resemble the 70′s Corolla but in a refined, very refined form, which looks impressive.
The two tone plastic comes in black and beige and the plastic feels solid, not in any way cheap as some were predicting (it may be because it was new). There’s a standard size glove box on passenger’s side and a touchscreen display in the middle, under the AC vents. There’s no climate control, just a simple AC with three regulators under the display, which is disappointing. If not in all, then at least in Altis or Grande version should they have given it.

The gear stick is a gate type in CVT versions and a six speed manual stick otherwise. Two cup holders reside behind the gear stick and beside the hand brake.

The seats are comfortable and soft, as expected from Corolla. The standard ones are fabric, while Grande has leather seats. The legroom is amazing. Even with the front seats fully backed up, I was able to sit easily in the back seats, my knees weren’t touching the front seats (which is one of my major problems as I am 6’1″). The rear seats recline forwards to give access to the trunk from inside.

Engine and Transmission:
It’s a 1.8 liter, four cylinder VVT-i (2ZR-FE), producing around 130 horsepower. As it’s only 1.8 Altis which is displayed, the details about 1.6 and 1.3 engines are vague but the 1.6 is expected to be 1ZR-FE. It’s been mated to a six speed manual in Altis, a virtual 7 speed CVT-i in Altis CVT and Altis Grande. The 1.6 variant will come with only automatic transmission while 1.3 will have both manual and automatic, and both of them will be launched either by the end of this year or the start of 2015. The new CVT-i transmission is first to come after Honda City Vario and it’s not something related to VVT-i which is an internal engine technology, I heard some guys confusing the two so I considered it better to clarify.
DSC_0124
Trunk:
Of course anyone can tell, Corollas are famous for bigger trunks, and that is the case with this one too.
